The museum is situated in the monumental part of the old Dominican convent in Piazza San Marco in Florence. The museum, whose architecture is itself a masterpiece of the Renaissance designed by Michelozzo, is renowend chiefly for the work of Fra Angelico (the Annunciation) present in many of the convent’s rooms. One wing is devoted to the “San Marco school” painters Fra Bartolomeo, Mariotto Albertinelli and their pupils who also lived and worked here, while a separate part of the museum houses a lapidarium with remains of medieval buildings torn down when a “slum clearance” plan coincided with the choice of Florence as capital of the new Kingdom of Italy in the latter part of the 19th century.
