The Jewish community in Florence is inextricably bound up with the unmistakable green dome of the synagogue that marks the city skyline, its presence testifying to Cav. David Levi’s determination to build “a monumental Temple worthy of the city”. Opened in 1882, the synagogue is the beating heart of the city’s Jewish community and an integral part of its history. The synagogue and Jewish Museum, set behind a cast iron railing in a luxuriant garden, house a rich collection of ceremonial items and examples of Jewish art while also offering visitors a splendid view over the city’s tiled roofs.
